Frequently Asked Questions

Centrex operates its laboratory 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you need information on patient service center hours, directions to the centers, turn-around-times, specimen collection requirements or just general information please call us at. 1-800-562-1550.

From time to time, patients have questions and concerns about laboratory procedures or regulations. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions.

Why do I have to fast prior to some blood tests?

It may be necessary to fast for some laboratory tests in order to provide an accurate laboratory result. Some foods interfere with test results. It is not always required to fast for tests, your physician will notify you if it is necessary.

How long is a standing order good for?

Patients that require laboratory work regularly may be provided with a standing order from their physician. A standing order is a convenient way for patients, physicians and Centrex to monitor certain test levels. Protime and CBC tests are the most common standing order tests. Standing orders are permitted for a period of six months. Only a physician office can set up this type of service.

Are there any Centrex Patient Service Centers open on Saturday?

Yes. Centrex offers Saturday hours at four Patient Service Centers:

  • 1656 Champlin Avenue, Utica from 7am to 1pm

  • 1614 North James Street, Rome from 8am to noon

  • 295 West Main Street, Ilion from 8am to noon

  • 4939 Brittonfield Pkwy, E. Syracuse from 8am to noon

If I have my blood taken today, when will my physician get the results?

The turn-around-time for results vary. Routine tests such as CBC, Cholesterol, Pregnancy, just to name a few, are resulted and reported the same day. Cytology and Pathology test results may take three to five days to result.

What is my blood type?

This test, as with all laboratory tests, must be ordered by a physician. Centrex does not perform blood typing test on specimens without an authorized physician order. If you are interested in knowing your blood type, it is best to contact your physician directly.

Do I have to fill out a requisition every time I need lab work? Isn’t my information already in the computer?

Yes, if you have had laboratory services performed at Centrex in the past, your information is in the computer. However, a laboratory requisition needs to be completed each visit to verify that the information is accurate and updated. The form must be completed in full, each time, to accompany your specimen. Your signature is also required for each date of service. Your physician may order different tests each time you visit, therefore, a new requisition is necessary and must include the ordered tests as well as diagnosis codes.

Can I have a copy of my lab results?

In order to comply with New York State Department of Health Regulation 58-1.8 of NYCRR, clinical laboratory “results of tests can only be reported to physicians or other authorized persons”. Results can only be reported to the ordering physician. Reports shall not be issued to the patients concerned except with the written consent of the physician or other authorized person.

What cholesterol is the good cholesterol?

HDL is the good cholesterol and it is recommended to be greater than 40 mg/dl. LDL Cholesterol is referred to as the “bad” cholesterol and its optimal value is less than 100 mg/dl. Total cholesterol levels are desirable at less than 200 mg/dl.

Can you send a copy of my lab results to my Primary Care Physician and my Specialist?

Although you are being cared for by more than one physician, Centrex is only permitted to send the results to the ordering physician. If you would like additional copies sent to your physician, it is necessary to ask the ordering physician to write “copy to Dr.______ ".

Why can’t I leave the Patient Service Center during a three-hour glucose tolerance test?

Sitting for three hours at a patient service center can be inconvenient, but it is necessary when glucose tolerance testing is being performed. Activities such as walking, eating, or drinking can affect your results. In order to provide accurate results, reduce the need for repeat testing, and for safety reasons it is required that patients receiving glucola remain at the patient service center.
